Detention and pre-trial custody: Recommendations, practical applications and available experience. Edited by N. Vereshchinska and A. Alekseyev. Kyiv, 216 pages.

The manual is expected to assist the investigators and judges in the making of lawful and balanced decisions on the use of pre-trial custodial restraints in Ukraine. The book was written by a group of renown practitioners and academics, including Professors of Law M.I. Siriy and M.V. Sirotkina, Judge of the Supreme Court of Ukraine and Merited Lawyer of Ukraine S.M. Mishchenko, Judge of the Kyiv City Court of Appeal S.S. Slynko, Vice-President – Head of Criminal Cases Chamber of Kyiv Regional Court of Appeal V.V. Zubar, and Swiss experts Prof. Stephan Gas and Dr. Jeremy Stevenson.

The content of this publication reflects a monitoring exercise conducted in August – September in the framework of Ukrainian-Swiss Project “Support of Judicial Reform. Strengthening of Judicial Independence” to identify key issues with ensuring the constitutional principle of the independence of judges in Ukraine in 2008. The publication explains the monitoring methods, the system of assessment of judicial independence in accordance with the internationally accepted standards and the results of the monitoring accompanied by experts’ conclusions featuring comparisons with similar results for 2007. A reference to the Centre for Judicial Studies is obligatory for any use of information or other materials in this publication.
